Historic Walking Tour Stop #7

Completed in 1908 at 1630 Glorietta Boulevard, this majestic Italian Renaissance mansion was the private residence of industrialist John D. Spreckels. Designed by architect Harrison Albright, the mansion was constructed from steel-reinforced concrete to withstand earthquakes and fires.

Overlooking the calm waters of Glorietta Bay, the residence featured 34 rooms, Italian marble fireplaces, a sweeping grand brass-balustraded staircase, and an Otis birdcage elevator. Spreckels made this mansion his permanent headquarters after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, directing his transit, water, and resort empire from its second-floor study.

Albright’s structural innovation made the mansion one of the earliest monolithic reinforced-concrete residential estates in Southern California. The fireproof construction was a direct response to the devastating fires Spreckels witnessed in San Francisco, reflecting his commitment to permanence and modern engineering.

Today operating as the historic Glorietta Bay Inn, the property allows guests and walking tour visitors to appreciate the original marble mantels, brass hardware, and formal courtyard fountains. The estate stands as a testament to the industrialist whose investments modernized Coronado into a world-class resort enclave.
