Historic Walking Tour Stop #3

Situated at 1100 Orange Avenue in the historic 1910 Bank of Commerce building, the Coronado Historical Association and Museum is the guardian of the peninsula’s primary archives. Founded in 1969, the museum houses more than 25,000 historic photographs, architectural blueprints of the Reid Brothers, and rare artifacts from the Coronado Beach Company.

Inside the galleries, visitors can explore authentic furnishings from Coronado Tent City (1900-1939), uniforms from early naval aviators who trained on North Island under Glenn Curtiss, and original letters written by L. Frank Baum during his Coronado winter residencies.

The building itself represents a prime specimen of Classical Revival architecture, retaining its original heavy brass bank vault, terrazzo tile flooring, and decorative plaster molding. This climate-controlled vault now protects rare 19th-century plat maps, early deed registers, and glass-plate photographic negatives documenting the initial development of the island.

Through permanent exhibits, rotating gallery displays, and walking tour lectures, the museum connects contemporary visitors with the pioneers, aviators, and authors who shaped the community. The research library provides scholars and genealogists with access to oral history recordings, historic city directories, and architectural surveys.
