Historical Chronicle
Aircraft carrier USS Long Island moored at NAS North Island on June 2, 1942, during the pivotal Pacific Fleet WWII mobilization.
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Coronado was instantly transformed into the primary frontline support and supply capital for the United States Pacific Fleet. Naval Air Station North Island became the supreme aircraft carrier hub of the Pacific theater, working 24 hours a day to repair, arm, and deploy battle-damaged aircraft carriers, naval squadrons, and thousands of aviation mechanics.
Coronado residents lived under strict wartime conditions, including nightly seaside blackouts, air-raid sirens, armed coastal artillery batteries overlooking the beaches, and anti-submarine nets stretched across the harbor entrance. Hotel del Coronado housed senior naval commanders and served as a recovery center for wounded officers, while local families opened their homes to host sailors, pilots, and wartime defense workers.
North Island industrial depots processed tens of thousands of combat aircraft and trained thousands of combat pilots who went on to victory in pivotal battles including Coral Sea, Midway, and Leyte Gulf. The profound sacrifice and dedication of the Coronado community during World War II forged an unbreakable, sacred bond between the Crown City and the United States Armed Forces.
