Archival Chronicle & Historical Significance
Historical Chronicle
Aerial photograph of the vast rows of striped canvas cottages and boardwalks of Tent City, which operated its beloved final season in 1939.
In the late summer of 1939, after thirty-nine glorious seasons of seaside concerts, swimming races, and family gatherings, Coronado Tent City welcomed its final vacationers. Changing recreational travel patterns, the widespread adoption of family automobiles, and the expansion of modern roadside motels had gradually diminished demand for seasonal canvas cottage colonies.
More decisively, impending global conflict and the rapid expansion of naval aviation and coastal defense operations required the land along the Silver Strand for military training and modern coastal highway infrastructure. Over the Labor Day weekend of 1939, thousands of nostalgic residents and lifelong summer guests gathered at the open-air pavilion to hear the final brass band concert and dance beneath the coastal stars.
When the tents were gently dismantled in the autumn of 1939, it marked the bittersweet end of a golden era of California seaside leisure. Today, vintage photographs, souvenir programs, and fond family memories preserved at the Coronado Historical Association celebrate the enchanting chapter of Tent City.
