U.S. President Richard Nixon and Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz traveling during their historic September 3, 1970 visit for the landmark State Dinner in Hotel del Coronado’s Crown Room.
On September 3, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon hosted a glittering state dinner at Hotel del Coronado in honor of President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz of Mexico. It marked the first time in United States history that an official state dinner was held outside of the White House in Washington, D.C., transforming Coronado into the diplomatic stage of the world.
The historic banquet was held in the magnificent, vaulted Crown Room beneath the glowing sugar-pine ceiling and chandeliers. More than one thousand distinguished guests attended, including United States cabinet secretaries, foreign ambassadors, California Governor Ronald Reagan, and Hollywood luminaries such as Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, and Red Skelton. The event celebrated the peaceful resolution of the Chamizal border dispute and deepened bilateral friendship.
The international summit underscored Hotel del Coronado's enduring status as America's premier presidential retreat, having hosted eleven sitting United States presidents. Decades later, the 1970 state dinner remains one of the most glamorous diplomatic events ever staged on the Pacific Coast.
