For more than ten thousand years prior to European exploration, the indigenous Kumeyaay people (specifically the Tipai-Ipai clans) lived in sophisticated balance with the coastal lands and waters of the San Diego region. The long, narrow peninsula of Coronado and the Silver Strand served as vital seasonal harvesting grounds where Kumeyaay families established coastal fishing encampments during low-tide cycles and warm summer months.

Archaeological surveys and shell midden sites across the peninsula reveal that Kumeyaay foragers gathered rich harvests of Pismo clams, oysters, abalone, mussels, and crabs along the bay mudflats and rocky shores. Skilled hunters captured waterfowl in the tidal salt marshes and netted mullet, corvina, and halibut using hand-knotted cordage made from agave fibers. Coastal sea salt was carefully gathered from natural tidal evaporation pools along the inner bay.

The Kumeyaay practiced seasonal rotation, traveling along ancestral trail corridors between mountain villages, river valleys, and coastal shoreline camps. Their deep spiritual respect for the land and ocean waters established the earliest human legacy of stewardship on the Coronado peninsula, a heritage honored and preserved in regional museum archives and historical records today.
