Hotel del Coronado’s magnificent Victorian turreted facade, formally designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior on May 5, 1977.
On May 5, 1977, the United States Department of the Interior officially designated Hotel del Coronado as a National Historic Landmark, the highest level of historic recognition bestowed upon private structures in the United States. The landmark designation recognized Hotel Del as an exceptional, irreplaceable masterpiece of American Queen Anne Victorian wooden architecture and a pivotal site in cultural history.
The designation represented a triumphant victory for community preservationists and hotel owner M. Larry Lawrence, who had purchased the aging resort in 1963 and invested tens of millions of dollars to halt demolition plans and painstakingly restore its historic wooden facade, Crown Room, and verandas.
Affixing the official bronze National Historic Landmark plaque to the hotel’s entrance guaranteed federal preservation oversight and celebrated the resort's enduring significance. Today, Hotel del Coronado stands proudly alongside the Statue of Liberty and Mount Vernon as an internationally recognized treasure of American heritage.
