Historical Chronicle
Battleship USS Kearsarge, one of sixteen gleaming white warships dispatched by President Theodore Roosevelt, anchoring off Coronado and San Diego in April 1908.
On April 14, 1908, the sixteen gleaming battleships of President Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet" steamed majestically past the Point Loma headland into San Diego harbor. Commissioned on an unprecedented fourteen-month global circumnavigation to showcase American naval power and peaceful maritime diplomacy, the fleet's arrival in San Diego sparked the largest public celebration in regional history.
Over 40,000 enthusiastic spectators packed the beaches of Coronado, Point Loma, and downtown San Diego to witness the awe-inspiring naval spectacle. As the massive white-hulled battleships dropped anchor in the harbor channel, coastal artillery guns fired thunderous salutes, and church bells rang across the bay. Coronado's founders and Hotel del Coronado hosted lavish receptions, grand balls, and seaside banquets for thousands of visiting naval officers and bluejackets.
The momentous visit of the Great White Fleet directly demonstrated San Diego Bay's unparalleled strategic value as the finest natural deep-water harbor on the Pacific coast. The overwhelming community support convinced the United States Navy to permanently expand its Pacific Fleet presence, accelerating the development of North Island and the naval installations that define Coronado today.
