Historical Chronicle
Vintage postcard depicting the seaside arrival point for the Coronado ferry system on San Diego Bay.
In January 1888, the Coronado Beach Company took delivery of its first purpose-built luxury steam ferry, the magnificent paddlewheeler Silver Gate. Constructed in San Francisco shipyards for $65,000, the 140-foot wooden vessel featured gleaming polished brass fittings, hand-carved mahogany salon benches, beveled glass windows, and a plush carpeted upper lounge designed to impress discerning travelers arriving from New York and Chicago.
Equipped with powerful walking-beam steam engines and side paddlewheels, the Silver Gate provided reliable, smooth transit across San Diego Bay, making the crossing in less than ten minutes for a fare of just five cents. She transported thousands of construction workers, hotel guests, horses, and carriages, linking the Santa Fe transcontinental rail terminus in San Diego directly with Coronado's steam dummy railroad.
The Silver Gate established a standard of maritime elegance that defined Coronado ferry transit for decades. For generations of residents and visitors, the melodic chime of the ferry's steam whistle and the rhythmic churning of her paddlewheels were the welcoming sounds of arrival in the Crown City.
