Archival Chronicle & Historical Significance
Historical Chronicle
The historic Bank of Coronado building at 1100 Orange Avenue, permanent home of the Coronado Historical Association museum, archives, and research center founded in 1969.
In 1969, as the opening of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge accelerated civic modernization and the demolition of historic Victorian cottages, a passionate group of local preservationists and community leaders founded the Coronado Historical Association (CHA). Dedicated to preserving the unique architectural, cultural, and maritime heritage of the Crown City, CHA began gathering rare archival photographs, family oral histories, and historic municipal artifacts.
Operating from its landmark museum headquarters in the historic 1910 Bank of Commerce building at 1100 Orange Avenue, CHA established a world-class historical museum, community research library, and walking tour program. The association led successful grassroots campaigns to designate local landmarks, preserve Victorian cottages, and catalog the rich historical record of the peninsula.
Today, the Coronado Historical Association serves as the premier guardian of island history, welcoming thousands of visitors, researchers, and students each year. Its exhibitions, publications, and archival collections ensure that Coronado's remarkable story is treasured and celebrated for generations to come.
