In 1894, the Coronado Beach Company established the Coronado Country Club, constructing an expansive 18-hole golf links and polo grounds on the open coastal plains southwest of Hotel del Coronado. Designed during the very infancy of American golf, it was among the earliest 18-hole courses laid out in Southern California and attracted championship players from across the nation and Europe.

Because coastal turf was challenging to irrigate in the 1890s, the course featured unique oiled sand greens, where attendants smoothed the surface with carpet drags after each putt. Ocean breezes off the Pacific and panoramic mountain backdrops created a sporting atmosphere unlike any other in the nation. The club hosted the prestigious Coronado All-Comers Tournament and international polo matches that drew thousands of spectators.

The Coronado Country Club played a decisive role in establishing the peninsula as a world-renowned capital of outdoor recreation and competitive sport, establishing a sporting tradition that lives on today at the championship Coronado Municipal Golf Course along Glorietta Bay.
