Coronado Central Beach, ranked the #1 Best Beach in America in 2012 by coastal scientist Dr. Stephen Leatherman ("Dr. Beach"), celebrated for sparkling golden mica mineral sands.
In May 2012, world-renowned coastal ecologist and ocean researcher Dr. Stephen Leatherman, widely known as "Dr. Beach," crowned Coronado Central Beach the #1 Beach in the entire United States in his prestigious 22nd annual national ranking. Outranking legendary coastal stretches in Hawaii, Florida, and the Carolinas, Coronado earned top marks across 50 rigorous scientific evaluation criteria, including water quality, sand softness, safety records, and environmental stewardship.
Coronado Central Beach is renowned for its vast, gently sloping expanse of soft golden sand that stretches for over a mile along Ocean Boulevard. Adding to its natural magic are glistening golden flecks of mica mineral, a natural silicate washed down from the Cuyamaca mountains that glitters like fairy dust beneath the California sunshine. Visitors and authors have often likened these glittering grains to the golden bricks of L. Frank Baum’s mythical Yellow Brick Road.
Backed by the historic turrets of Hotel del Coronado and cooled by continuous Pacific sea breezes, Coronado Beach remains a crown jewel of California's coastal parklands. The national ranking solidified Coronado's standing as a world-class beach destination that balances pristine public access with dedicated community preservation.
