Historical Chronicle
Robert Mosher’s award-winning 2.12-mile curved orthotropic steel box girder bridge rising 200 feet over San Diego Bay, opened August 2, 1969.
On August 2, 1969, the ribbon was officially cut on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, inaugurating one of the most recognizable and graceful architectural engineering marvels on the Pacific Coast. Designed by visionary architect Robert Mosher, the 2.1-mile curving orthotropic steel bridge soared 200 feet above San Diego Bay, its gentle 80-degree sweeping curve carefully calculated to allow massive aircraft carriers of the United States Navy to pass safely underneath to naval shipyards.
Governor Ronald Reagan joined local civic leaders and thousands of cheering residents for the grand opening ceremony and automobile motorcade. The bridg’ distinctive blue spans and slender concrete pillars, inspired by classical Spanish mission arches, won prestigious national awards from the American Institute of Steel Construction for aesthetic brilliance and structural grace.
The bridge revolutionized life on the peninsula, reducing a twenty-minute ferry crossing to an effortless five-minute highway glide. While residents poignantly bid farewell to the historic ferry boats, the bridge became a breathtaking visual gateway to the Crown City, offering drivers unforgettable panoramic vistas of the downtown skyline, San Diego Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.
