Historical Chronicle
Victorian founders Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story reviewing the original 1885 Coronado Beach Company townsite plat map and corporate charter.
On April 7, 1885, retired railroad executive Elisha S. Babcock Jr. and Chicago piano manufacturer Hampton L. Story made a fateful exploratory boat trip across San Diego Bay to hunt wild quail on the uninhabited peninsula. Struck by the mild ocean climate, sweeping panoramic vistas of mountains and sea, and pristine beaches, the two entrepreneurs conceived a bold vision: purchasing the barren landmass and transforming it into a master-planned seaside resort community centered around a world-class luxury hotel.
In December 1885, Babcock and Story finalized the purchase of the entire 4,185-acre peninsula from the heirs of Bezer Simmons and Archibald Peachy for $110,000. To develop their ambitious enterprise, they organized the Coronado Beach Company, partnering with prominent investors including Josephus Collett, Jacob Gruendike, and General Joseph W. Noble. The company established corporate offices and immediately initiated an unprecedented infrastructure campaign.
The founders engaged civil engineers to survey the land, lay out broad diagonal boulevards and residential blocks, plant over 10,000 ornamental trees, drill freshwater wells, and organize a dependable ferry system across the bay. The founding of the Coronado Beach Company marked the formal birth of modern Coronado, transforming an isolated coastal sandspit into one of the most celebrated planned communities in the American West.
