Coronado Historical Association Archival Collection Primary Archival Record

Born in Evansville, Indiana in 1848, Elisha Spurr Babcock Jr. rose to prominence as a railway executive and auditor for the Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad. After developing severe pulmonary ailments caused by Midwest winters, Babcock traveled to Southern California in the early 1880s seeking restorative ocean air and healing sunshine.

In April 1885, while staying in downtown San Diego, Babcock met Chicago piano magnate Hampton L. Story. The two men embarked on an exploratory small-boat quail hunting expedition across San Diego Bay to the uninhabited, brush-covered sandspit of Coronado. Standing atop the coastal dunes overlooking the Pacific surf, Babcock experienced a sudden flash of entrepreneurial inspiration: he envisioned a world-class luxury resort hotel that would become the wonder of the Pacific Coast.

Babcock organized the Coronado Beach Company, recruited major Midwest investors, and directed the rapid development of the entire island. He orchestrated the legendary 1886 land auction, established trans-bay steam ferry lines, laid freshwater pipelines from the Otay Valley across the bay floor, and commissioned architects James and Merritt Reid to design Hotel del Coronado. When the hotel opened on February 19, 1888, Babcock personally greeted the first guests, serving as managing director for several years.

Babcock remained a prominent San Diego civic leader and real estate developer until his death in 1922. His bold vision, executive perseverance, and unyielding belief in Coronado transformed an isolated desert sandspit into one of the most celebrated coastal cities in the world.
