Documented Historical Synthesis
Step #4 Archival ChronicleOn November 13, 1886, more than 6,000 prospective buyers arrived by steam ferry to attend the Great Coronado Land Auction. Accompanied by free barbecue, brass bands, and auctioneers shouting under open-air pavilions, the sale generated over $1 million in real estate transactions in a single afternoon, providing the liquid capital required to construct Hotel del Coronado.
Architects James and Merritt Reid orchestrated an extraordinary construction effort beginning in March 1887. Hundreds of Chinese laborers, Canadian woodworkers, and local craftsmen worked around the clock under electric arc lights, assembling millions of board feet of Northern California redwood and Douglas fir into an intricate Queen Anne Victorian masterpiece.
In late 1887, the Coronado Beach Company laid an underwater iron pipeline across the floor of San Diego Bay, delivering fresh mainland water to cultivate botanical gardens, palms, and citrus groves. On February 19, 1888, Hotel del Coronado formally opened, equipped with Thomas Edison’s modern electric lighting and the world’s largest column-free dining pavilion, the magnificent Crown Room.
