Step #9 Archival Chronicle

Entering the 21st century, Coronado balanced municipal modernization with rigorous preservation of its coastal and architectural character. In 1990, the city established Coronado Dog Beach as a permanent year-round leash-free coastal park, celebrated for its scenic views of Point Loma and pristine sands.

In 2005, the Coronado Public Library unveiled nine jewel-toned stained-glass windows created by artist Brenda Huffman, honoring L. Frank Baum’s Oz characters and permanently anchoring the author’s legacy within the community’s civic center.

In May 2012, renowned coastal scientist Dr. Stephen Leatherman ("Dr. Beach") officially named Coronado Central Beach the #1 Beach in America. The ranking celebrated the beach’s wide expanses, gentle surf, and shimmering gold mica flecks that glisten along the tide line like the legendary Yellow Brick Road.
